Timely Topics: Groundwater Awareness

Groundwater Awareness Week may have been earlier this month, but it’s never too late to learn about this topic. Start off with a walk, and listen to The Walking Classroom’s Water Cycle (Complete-#148, 4-#30, STEM-#12) podcast! Once you’re done, seize the chance to dive into a multitude of resources and hands-on activities!

Get a leg up with Groundwater!

Start your aspiring ecologists on the right foot with this lesson introducing groundwater from the Groundwater Foundation! Older students can supplement their groundwater expertise with this surface water and groundwater activity from National Geographic! Or, you may want to round out your groundwater journey with some books and lessons, available for free through the Groundwater Project!

Looking for a hand-on activity? If you can perform it safely, try this EPA activity on groundwater movement. Or, do a demonstration using the extension activity! Other ideas? You may want to consider a smaller scale adaptation. Test students’ knowledge with these groundwater-focused games and puzzles!

Watch out for Watersheds!

Invite students to get geographical with their groundwater knowledge! Try this lesson on watershed awareness from the National Parks Service!

Once kids have wet their feet in the wide world of watersheds, have them participate in a watershed sleuth challenge with the National Environmental Education Foundation!

And, still searching for fun, fresh(water) activities? Students can apply their watershed learning with a watershed building activity!

Water (Cycle)’s the Watchword!

Take students through this water cycle lesson plan, courtesy of Scholastic! Still thirsty for more? Water you waiting for? Engage with this lesson from NASA! Then ‘cycle’ around to some activities, by having your students build an aquifer in a cup and/or create a reservoir with these two hands-on lessons!
