Learning Walks Work . . . Even in Chilly Chicago!

07.12.17
posted by a Walking Classroom Adopter

I began using The Walking Classroom with my students in February. They have really enjoyed these opportunities to get out of the classroom regularly. Our school is in the Chicago area, so most of our early walks were fairly chilly. However, there were never any complaints. We bundled up and enjoyed our learning walks. My former students would see us going out and wonder why they had not had this opportunity.

This program works so well with my idea of how learning should happen! Four years ago, I began transforming my classroom. I ditched traditional desks and now utilize only stand-up desks, tables with pillow seating, and a table with wiggle seats. I even have room to spread out on the floor with pillows. This allows for much movement throughout our day. The addition of The Walking Classroom just seemed like a natural fit to my teaching philosophy.

The podcasts which are available have really fit well into my curriculum. We started by listening to podcasts about famous African Americans and scientists. Our most recent podcasts have been related to our government unit. The podcasts provide a great opportunity to introduce a new topic or review a unit which we have just concluded. The podcasts are engaging and just the right length!

Now that the weather is improving, we are enjoying the sunshine and taking advantage of the warmer weather by having our discussions outside also. Our classroom does not have any windows, so the opportunity to move our learning outside and get some exercise is wonderful! We have figured out that we walk about a mile each time.

Thanks so much for this wonderful program.
