The Walking Classroom Awards

Partnership for a Healthier America – 2018 Impact Award

The Walking Classroom is a recipient of the Partnership for a Healthier America’s (PHA’s) Impact Award. The award is part of PHA’s 2018 Catalyst for Change Awards that honor organizations and community leaders who exemplify positive change by creating solutions to ensure that all children and young adults — especially those disproportionately affected — will live healthier lives and grow up to be adults free from obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.

Triangle Business Journal’s 2017 Innovation Award

The Walking Classroom was one of thirteen North Carolina companies that received the Triangle Business Journal’s first-ever Innovation Awards at a ceremony on October 4, 2017. The Innovation Awards highlighted the ways the region’s businesses confront problems and seek innovative solutions.

The Power of Sharing Finalist

The Walking Classroom was a finalist in Coastal Federal Credit Union’s inaugural Power of Sharing Event in May of 2016. Coastal Federal Credit Union hosted and sponsored this event, highlighting the efforts several nonprofits make in the Triangle. Coastal’s business partners in the community and the Foundation gave $275,000 in charitable contributions to organizations that continue to make a significant difference in our communities.

United Way’s Idea Generation/Next Finalist

The Walking Classroom was featured at the United Way of the Greater Triangle’s (UWGT) first Idea Generation/Next event. The event showcased innovative ideas from area women and people of color, currently underrepresented in the entrepreneurial sector. The award recognizes a Healthy Community Institute (HCI)–participating organization that achieved strong results after attending HCI in the areas of strategic planning, board engagement, and individual donor development for increased sustainability.

William J. Bennington Health Community Institute for Nonprofit Excellence Award

The Walking Classroom won this award in February in 2015. The award recognizes a Healthy Community Institute (HCI) participating organization that achieved strong results after attending HCI in the areas of strategic planning, board engagement, and individual donor development for increased sustainability.

The New Rural

Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust – Innovations in Rural Health Award

The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, one of North Carolina’s largest private philanthropies, launched the Rural Health Award in 2013 to recognize innovative rural health work from around the country. In April, 2014, The Walking Classroom was chosen from more than 70 submissions from around the U.S. as one of four award finalists.

The New Rural - Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Finalist


eSchool Media’s Readers’ Choice Award

In Spring of 2013, School News (eSN) launched their “Readers’ Choice Awards” that highlight the top 40 ed-tech products each year, as nominated by readers. In nominating their favorite products, eSN asked readers to tell them how they’re using these products to improve teaching, learning, or school administration—and to what effect. The result is a list of ed-tech products and services that have proven to be effective.

Active Schools Acceleration Project

National Grand Prize Winner for Educational Technology Innovation

In February of 2012, Active Schools Acceleration Project launched a Physical Activity Innovation Competition. They scoured the nation to find great school physical activity programs that could be adopted by many more schools across the country. Over 500 applications poured in from all 50 states. The Walking Classroom was one of two $50,000 grand prize winners.

Health Innovation Challenge

In March 2012, the Health Innovation Challenge invited North Carolina’s entrepreneurs, community leaders, citizens, and university students to submit solutions to help reduce obesity across the state. The Challenge attracted ideas from more than 60 North Carolina-based operations and individuals. The Walking Classroom was one of three winners of this award.
