“We Get to Do TWC Today!”

06.28.23
posted by a Walking Classroom Adopter

I am the Afterschool Site Director at Elk Valley Elementary School located in Pioneer, Tennessee. We are a small (130 students), K-8 school located in the mountains of East Tennessee.

We have over 60 students registered with our afterschool program, and we make use of the WalkKits two to three times a week. Being a history nerd myself, I especially enjoy the lessons relating to United States history, particularly the ones about the founding of our country, such as Benjamin Franklin (4-#47, Complete-#69), “Yankee Doodle” (4-#57, Complete-#68), “The Star-Spangled Banner” (5-#64, Complete-#74), and US Preamble and Constitution (4-#58, Complete-#72).

We recently skipped ahead and listened to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (4-#64, Complete-#123) and Rosa Parks (4-#65, Complete-#124). All of these lessons have led to great discussions among the students, and even my staff and I have enjoyed listening and learning from them.

I love the format The Walking Classroom did with these, as they are very easy to listen to while getting some exercise. When my students come into afterschool each day, there is a schedule on the whiteboard. A very common expression heard is “we get to do TWC today, yay!” on the days it is written on the schedule.

The Walking Classroom is making a difference at Elk Valley Elementary!
