Teachers Talk: Standards and Core Content

01.09.23
posted by Natalie Dekle

The Walking Classroom was originally developed to provide students with physical activity without sacrificing instructional time (which it did!). However, over the years, educators have cited an array of other benefits of The Walking Classroom, including how the program builds core content knowledge and aligns with standards.

Builds Core Content Knowledge

I use The Walking Classroom to reinforce key concepts and teach new skills related to our units of study. So far, we’ve learned about marine animals, animal adaptations, and more!
– Katherine Klinger, Illinois

esser-alignedAs an ELA teacher, I love the variety of topics relating to materials and authors. There are so many choices to pick from!
– Kim Petro, Pennsylvania

Since receiving the materials, we have implemented a routine of walking to a weekly podcast, which relates directly to a featured curriculum area of focus. Students’ understanding has vastly improved through thee incorporation of audio instruction. Student engagement remains high, as they are excited to extend their learning beyond the curriculum.
– Erin Galante, Nevada

I absolutely love this program! This is an amazing tool that provides my students an opportunity to learn core content through listening and exercising.
– Melissa Turner, North Carolina

Through the podcasts we are learning specific content that complements our Social Studies and English Language Arts curriculum, the importance of developing a healthy lifestyle, and improving listening skills all while exercising.
– Julia Nestor, West Virginia

I was especially pleased to see how the podcasts aligned with my ELA curriculum. I would coordinate a podcast that supplemented my lessons and/or text.
– Shannon Duffek, North Carolina

Aligns with Standards

I’m very appreciative of having access to the WalkKits and podcasts. I love how the podcasts cover academic standards, as well as character traits and SEL. My students love using The Walking Classroom!
– Jessica Campton, North Carolina

The Walking Classroom resources we received are a lifesaver! Our students love the opportunity to be active while learning, and the teachers love the ease of use and alignment of lessons to their objectives.
– Katie Chavarria, Washington

The whole premise of The Walking Classroom is brilliant. I love that I can find podcasts tied to about everything we are doing.
– Shelly Rose, Arizona

The lessons I have been able to use have matched perfectly with what I have been teaching. We use the powerpoint lessons and videos that are included before and after the walks to further discuss the concepts.
– Rebecca Vanderweerd, California

and Speaking of Those Standards . . .

In our ongoing efforts to support you, our adopters, in your lesson planning, each podcast resource page now includes that podcast’s alignment with Common Core standards and/or Next Generation Science Standards (for third through eighth grade).

And, you can even search by standard code in the podcast search keyword field to see all podcasts that align with a particular standard.

Happy Trails!
