Today’s Walking Classroom podcast focuses on the Emancipation Proclamation – President Abraham Lincoln’s document that basically said slavery was illegal and if slaves from the South escaped or were freed by Northern troops, the slave would be considered a free person and would not be returned to his previous owner. The Proclamation was an important factor in the Union’s victory in the Civil War because many freed slaves joined the Northern armies.
