Energizing After School Activity

04.19.23
posted by a Walking Classroom Adopter

We are grateful to have The Walking Classroom to use with the Show Low Parks & Recreation Department After School Program. Show Low is a rural community in Navajo County, the fourth largest in Arizona by area, which continues to experience poverty rates more than 25%. Our After School Program helps students focus on academics, STEM, arts, culinary, and much more in a fun and energizing way.

Show Low City Parks & Recreation Department is incorporating The Walking Classroom through a collaboration with Show Low Unified School District to offer the program throughout the school year that integrates with the teacher’s curriculum in the city’s After School Program. The After School Program is the only program in the White Mountains of Arizona that serves students from other school districts and private schools.

Several children participating in the After School Program are from low-income families, and some are Native Americans from the neighboring Apache Reservation. The Walking Classroom has proven to be a meaningful experience for these children and provided an encouraging opportunity for them to learn and integrate a regimen of exercise in their daily activities.

Thank you again for The Walking Classroom, a program that we will be able to use not just now but for years to come!

Melissa King
Community Recreation Coordinator
City of Show Low
